As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes, Joe Layden

5.0

In a world where "life is pain, Highness", this memoir is an inconceivably sweet balm for the weary soul. Too many actors play it cool, holding aloof in the recounting of their time playing a particular role. The charming Cary Elwes does not do that. Rather, he delights in the memory of his journey to, through, and after the role of Farm Boy/Westley/Dread Pirate Roberts, regaling us along the way with stories about his fellow actors, who he clearly loves dearly to this day. It is a relief to hear that, he, and seemingly everyone involved, loved making and still love this movie as much as I do.

The book alone is a joy, but I cannot recommend the audio version strongly enough. I would listen to Cary Elwes read the side of a cereal box - but hearing him recount the story of he and Robin requesting take after take of the kiss that "left them all behind" is even better.
