The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence by Stuart Moore, Stan Lee

2.0

I am not a huge comic book nerd, but I've still grown up around superheroes through TV and movies. So when I saw Stan Lee's name on this book, I picked it up hoping for the best. It was a decent enough book, though I feel like it was not enough as a book and a little more as a comic. I can't really say it was great at being either.

The powers were a little confusing. I understood the strength of the ox and the speed of the rabbit, but I didn't really get why the pig was a technopath. And yeah, it's a little weird how the characters all manage to speak English while being from different countries. Plus, a little too convenient that all of them don't really have good homes or strong relationships that would keep them from leaving. I know that trope is used a lot in superhero stories as well as in YA, but still. I won't really go into the logistics of the Chinese Zodiac, but I'm fairly sure this book wasn't using it properly.

It also kind of bothered me how quickly Steven was seen as the leader, just because he was the first and he ad the Tiger. There was no discussion about it, no questioning from the others about it-- they just immediately decided and started looking to him for direction. It was extra puzzling since Liam was clearly tougher and more experienced, and Roxanne was older, but both seemed perfectly okay having a fourteen-year-old as the leader.

The villain was "meh" but I think that's a fallacy of the modern Marvel villains, unfortunately. The one really creepy thing he did was crush the Monkey's spirit. But he too suffered from lacking character development, so I didn't find him interesting most of the time. I could go on but I think I've covered it.

So yeah, disappointment all around. More connection with the Zodiac and using its astrology properly, more character development, things like that would've helped this book a lot. Or go the other way and make it a full comic book.
