- .25 because of how much I hate Stephen. I'm weeping in bed at 2am because of this book

Stephen was blatantly disrespectful and insulted everything he happened upon, so no he didn't "do nothing wrong". Being new and uncomfortable with a different culture isn't an excuse to be a complete and outright prick. I'm not surprised that someone like you would glance over the fact that he was willing to forcibly traumatize Evie in his own interest.
And honestly, I find it ridiculous that you can paint Yianni as a jerk after finishing the book because it's completely explained that he was rude out of concern and Daphne came to understand that, as well as the fact that time and time again, Yianni is the rock Daphne needs in her life. In every single instance, Stephen manages to drop the ball-- and it's not "teehee", it's weaponized incompetence.
