Just Jaime by Terri Libenson

4.0

This was probably my favorite of this series. I really liked that the book illustrated how toxic friendships operate, and that it made it clear why breaking from these friendships is the best thing a person could do. It's been many years since I was in middle school, but I vividly remember this kind of friend drama, and I think these books do a good job of accurately and sensitively portraying it. I also very much appreciated that Jaime discovered that she can and should talk important issues out with her mother, that adults also make mistakes, and that the people we are when we're 13 aren't necessarily the same people we are once we hit middle age. These are nice messages for kids this age, who sometimes don't quite get that adults were also once kids too--not that adults always do a good job of conveying the empathy kids this age require. These books provide a lot of conversation for kids approaching or in the age group depicted.
