Shannon created such a rich world with so much history and culture, filled with beautifully human characters. It felt slow and plodding at first, but by the end I would've willingly stayed for several more thousand page books.

Ead and TanĂ© are my favorites and had me emotionally engaged with their stories from beginning to end. Ead is especially interesting; while TanĂ© is much more of a typical flawed fantasy protagonist (though a million times better written than most fantasy novels), Ead kept me so invested in what she was doing, even when so much of her plot was court intrigue. The love (sapphic or otherwise) and bonds between all the characters had a large part of what made me love this book so much;  every character, even ones I disliked -- sorry Niclays -- had motives and drives I could empathize with, and were written in an always believable way.

Is masterpiece too cliche a term? I think this definitely is one.
