dark emotional sad medium-paced

Pattyn is labeled as a “problem child” by her abusive father and send to live with her aunt for the summer. Throughout those few months she learns what love is, experiences things for the first time, and genuinely enjoys her life for the first time. Her life is ripped apart when I few months later she loses everyone she loves and is disowned by her father.

This story covered a lot of hard topics; abusive parent, alcoholism, religious uncertainty, and death. All of these combined made for a really sad story. Pattyn never truly got to be a child/teenager because she was busy taking care of her younger siblings and forced to submit to her father (until she grew the courage to speak against him).
