I have heard people say that this is trauma porn. and i have heard people say it’s devastatingly life changing literature. i think it’s neither of these things. i think it is dreary, and frustrating. i think the horrors within it are awful and difficult to read, but aren’t commodified as many have claimed. however. these horrors are just that. horrors. personally, i did not find them sad. in saying that. my eyes passively wept tears for the entirety of the final four chapters. if we were just discussing these final four chapters, i agree it is devastatingly life-changing literature. but you have to get through hundreds of pages of a (honestly) mediocre book about a very traumatic life.
