As purely charming as I remembered it being when I first read it about ten years ago. I haven't been as impressed by more recent output from Gaarder, but to know that I can always come back to this (and a couple of the other earlier books) is useful.
Edit, 2020: well, reading again does sometimes spoil the magic on a book. Perhaps I’ve outgrown it? Either way, it’s still very readable, I’m just not so charmed any more.
