I stalled out last year around 80 pages into this book. Then I visited the Morgan Library and saw it on display in the gift shop, compelling me to pick it back up. I still felt unsure about it until the third section, once things flip into Ida’s perspective it’s like putting on glasses for the first time. The ends do justify the means - knowing how insufferable some characters are, or are made to seem, helps you appreciate better what’s actually going on in their minds when you learn the truth.
