Jessica Jones: Alias, Vol. 1 by Brian Michael Bendis

3.0

Disappointed that the noir elements aren't played up more. Explicit content telegraphs that we should consider this a Dark Story, but at least in this first collected volume, the characters and plotlines are diluted, pretending to something they aren't. Not bad, just not the distinctive for which I'd been hoping, and
Spoiler the Captain America thing, albeit handled serviceably, I suppose, was awkward -- though I admit that it may have seemed more natural to someone who follows the Marvel line
. This title had been included in a list of graphic novels for fans of Veronica Mars, and that is one show that did neo-noir right. R-rated material doesn't suffice (nor, btw, is it required) to make a point about damaged people or societal evils.

The art is intentionally rough, and the coloring is evocative -- both of which effectively add to the isolated, world-weary tone. The penchant of dividing up a single page into stacked panels, especially in conversations, gave the impression of clutter and lack of finesse. However, it shows promise, and I'm holding out hope that it evolves.

I'm still interested, but I'm not enthralled.
