This book had an interesting concept, but in the end it felt a bit to long and used so many tropes you typically see in ya fantasy that it missed the mark for me. This book is nearly 500 pages, and yet it took practically over a third of the beginning to get through the synopsis of the story and onto new stuff. And the new stuff was so filled with tropes you typically see in the rebellion type fantasy ya that it just didn’t make up for the slow beginning.
I feel like I might have liked this more a couple years back before I was really into ya fantasy? Before I read so many books with similar plot styles. This is probably a good book for people semi new to fantasy or this kind of rebellion style fantasy, it has good writing a likeable enough characters, but for me it just didn’t bring enough new to the plot to keep me interested in reading the sequel. One thing I can praise is most of this book, past the beginning is not very romance focused, which is somewhat different from a lot of similar books I’ve read, but I can already see a love triangle lining up for the sequel, another reason I probably wont be picking it up.
