Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke And Other Misfortunes by Eric LaRocca

dark funny fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? No
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

2.5

me when i realize this is just some homie's vent writing..
things have gotten worse since we last spoke -- 3*; it was extremely gross at moments and when it hit, it hit. but a lot of it was so out of pocket goofy (the mommy kink...) that i couldn't take it seriously lmfao
the enchantment -- 1*; the amount of unnecessary em dashes and the overly simplistic writing made it feel like i was reading a first draft rather than a fully formed and published work. the theme was both overly vague and overly on the nose, and it annoyed me.
you'll find it's like that all over -- 3.5*; i had the most fun with this one, though to introduce a foreigner and say he speaks "little english" only to have him speak in fluent sentences that no person who speaks "little english" would be able to form is poor planning at its best. also the random "his husband was SO racist he hated WHITE EUROPEANS!!!!" girl that's called xenophobia <3
overall -- 2.5* rounded down because the writing annoyed me and i don't like that i was just reading someone's vent writings about their religious trauma or whatever, sorry
