The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music by Dave Grohl

emotional funny inspiring reflective medium-paced

5.0

I listened to the expanded audio for this and I think that really made the experience. It was great to hear Dave’s story in his own voice.

I have a hard time rating memoirs because this is someone’s life that I have been invited to look into. Yes, it’s edited and carefully composed to show us the things the author wants us to see, but it’s also a deeply personal journey that has been opened to anyone who wants to take it.

I loved hearing about the experiences Dave Grohl has had in his life that brought him to where he is now. The timeline was a little hard to follow occasionally, but I think he did a great job putting the reader in the moment with him. He spoke about some hard things and expressed both humility and gratitude in a way that I found refreshing.

It’s clear this man values his family above all, and that he cherishes human connection in his passion. I started this book as a Foo Fighters and Nirvana fan, but I don’t think that’s a necessity to find value in this book. If you love music and you love memoirs, especially those penned by the subject in question, you can’t go wrong here.
