Season of the Swamp by Yuri Herrera
4.5
REALLY COOL
loved the concept of taking a niche part of history thats been lost or undocumented. Saidiya Hartman has written on this sort of thing
to be placed in New Orleans in 1853 is to explore a lawless world. i wanted to keep reading because i felt so immersed in the world Herrera was building. insurance fires. mexican exiles. brothels and coffee shops and outdoor markets. a mess of many languages. VIOLENT ILLNESS !!! the obscenity of slavery. shady law enforcement. it all feels so real and,,, american.
the tension of all of these people living together in this really gnarly landscape. so many of them trying to escape.
the details referring to all the different languages and dialects being spoken. especially pointing out the ultra specific differences between his spanish and imperial spanish
yeah will be thinking about this one for a while
