Caraval by Stephanie Garber
5.0
Caraval is the first book in the Caraval series by Stephanie Garber. It follows Scarlett who has forever been intrigued by the magical wonders of the mysterious Caraval. Her younger sister, Tella, and a strange boy persuade Scarlett to leave her small island and monstrous father to enter the games, but nothing is as it seems. She must find her missing sister to win the game and obtain the prize of the single wish, but will she go mad whilst trying to determine what is reality and what is just part of the dangerous Caraval.
I could not put this book down! My mind is completely blown after reading this, I needed to sit in silence just to comprehend what I’d just read. There was so many unexpected plot twists which made this book an incredible page turner. The mechanics of the world are just incredible, I think the best way to describe everything going on was just completely and utterly mind-bending. It was like a dream where everything makes sense until it doesn’t (in a good way). The touch of romance really added to this book too and I can’t wait to read what happens in the next book of the series, Legendary!
There were a couple of issues I had while reading Caraval, there was a slight lack of world-building, but this did allow my imagination to run wild, which I think is the point. My second issue was the absence of character development, we still know next to nothing about the other characters, though with it being the first book of a series, I’m hoping more will be unveiled.
Overall, I really enjoyed Caraval and it’s a must-read on anyone who loves YA Fantasy!
