This was a re-read - reading it out loud to my son at bedtimes.
In my head I had remembered this as being a much funnier story - reading it this time around, there's actually a huge amount of nostalgia through the book, for a small boy's very simple childhood. The relationship between Danny and his dad is lovely, and there's lots of suspense as you read.

It does end spectacularly, and with a great deal of humour, but it isn't the same, silly sort of story as The BFG.
