I’m really torn on this one. The premise? 10/10. The execution…? Less so.
I have been wavering back and forth on whether or not I liked this one, and whether or not I continue with the series. On paper, it should have easily been a favorite series: dark academia, flawed magicians, library of Alexandria, murder? Like, I’m in. But the reality is I’m not even really sure what happened in this book.
There were definitely fun moments, some good banter, and interesting characters. But it also suffered from inconsistent pacing, confusing magic systems/world building, and getting lost in flowery academic language that, more often than not, wasn’t saying anything.
The jury is still out. I think it’s a net positive for me, but only just. Maybe I’ll return to this, maybe I won’t. But I think I need some time.
