Drowning Erin
by Elizabeth O'Roark
4 Stars.
Wow I really don't know what I'm feeling right now.
On one hand, Erin's thoughts and emotions were like a carbon copy of my own, and I've never felt so heard and understood in my life. Like what I feel is valid and I'm not alone in my apathy caused by my environment.
On the other hand, the back and forth between Erin and Brenden made me want to grab them by the necks and lock them together in a room until they both finally lay all their confessions out.
But, seeing as how I stayed up all night and finished this book in one sitting despite having an 8am class, I'm going to justify giving this a solid 4 stars.
This book perfectly showcases why money isn't everything in life.
Money may guarantee stability, but it cannot guarantee happiness.
Too many people don't understand that. Too many people put money first. Too many people ruin relationships because of money. And too many people don't realize that they can't bring money to their grave.
My heart hurt for Erin. She was a brilliant girl who let her "other-half" gradually snuff out her light. She gave up too much of herself to keep the peace in the relationship.
It was beautiful to witness her journey of slowly finding pieces of herself again. Her transition also gave me hope that one day, I too, will be able to go from surviving to thriving.
