There's so much I love about this book. The characters are amazing, the emotions are portrayed incredibly well, the storytelling is powerful. Why did it take me until 2021 to find this book?

Ada was born with a deformed foot. Her mother keeps her inside out of shame, forcing Ada into a cabinet when she doesn't behave and sometimes beating her and her brother in fits of anger. It's a heavy topic for a middle school novel but it's handled well. Ada and her brother are able to heal and find love and safety when they evacuate London, but it's a long journey. The beautiful ending drove home the theme of found family and made me wish for more of Ada, James, and Sarah's story- I'm glad there's a sequel.
