I'm really not sure how to rate this book.

There were several moments where I felt things could have been condensed, where I was just trying to get through a chapter to get to the next. The writing is lyrical and the prose is beautiful, but getting through was a struggle partially due to the length and partially due to the subject matter.

Centered on Jude, a laywer with a deeply traumatic past, A Little Life utilizes multiple points of view to tell a complex tale of friendship, hardship, and survival that spans decades.

I don't think that I can recommend this book to anyone that I know. Did I enjoy it? No. Enjoy is not a word I'd use here. I've never been more miserable while reading a book and I was desperate for the small moments of happiness for Jude. But am I still thinking about it days later? Yes. There are some moments that really stick with you.

This book tackles what feels like most triggering topics, with a new one coming each time you think it can't get worse.  It is devastating. If you choose to read it, please take the trigger warnings seriously.
