The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse by Louise Erdrich
5.0
Louise Erdrich is one of my two favorite "folk" authors, and the other one is Wendell Berry. They are similar in that they each have a fairly large body of work which chronicles a particular place on earth and features the same characters in each volume. I will get to Berry eventually, but I think this is probably my favorite work by Erdrich (so far.) This one tells the story of an investigation into whether Sister Leopolda (aka Pauline Puyat) should be elevated to the status of saint. The story really takes off when the investigator, Father Jude Miller, comes to stay with Father Damien Modeste (who is not what he appears to be.) Readers familiar with Erdrich will happily recognize many of the characters here, and like all her works, this wonderful story is filled to overflowing with crazy and beautiful subplots and startling, breathtaking imagery. One should really begin at the beginning, with Love Medicine, but this for me was a huge highlight of this series.
