Consisting of 5 short stories, I'd say this book showcases how Banana Yoshimoto is able to dig deep into human emotions and somehow pour them all out into paper. In words that are seemingly simple, we experience heartbreak, anger, grief, and also peace and contentment, together with the characters.
My favourite story is "Mama" where the main character almost died of food poisoning. She got back to work immediately afterwards but feels overwhelmed. Thanks to the kindness she received, not only she is able to recover bodily, but also make peace with her past.
