Captive of the Pirate King by Rebecca F. Kenney
3.0

There were a lot of things I liked about this book, but overall it just felt like it was missing...something.

Things I liked:
- our main heroine, Veronica; she's got spirit and tenacity but she's got flaws too that make her more engaging as a character
- our main hero, Locke; he was quite charming and broody yet also surprisingly tender
- the romance plot; Veronica and Locke have some pretty great chemistry
- the pacing; there's a lot that happens in this book without it ever feeling too fast or chaotic
- the sense of adventure I'd hoped for in a pirate book

Things I didn't care for:
- Veronica's magic; it was always so grotesquely described and it just didn't feel like it went with the rest of the story
- the whole Mordan story line; I found it tedious and distracting. I found the main romance/pirate story line was more engaging, and I kept wishing the author would just forget Mordan existed
- some of the writing felt wooden and rigid in places, but overall the quality was pretty good
