We Free the Stars by Hafsah Faizal

4.0

We Free the Stars is eerie and adventurous, and it takes time to re-learn this ancient Arabia-inspired fantasy world. Compared to its predecessor, this book focuses more on the characters than the quest. All of the characters are engaging, and their interconnections create interesting moral dilemmas. The Prince of Death is particularly complex, his flaws and insecurities stemming from chronic abuse and manipulation, and he has a natural redemption arc. The prose is a bit too lyrical and the book could have benefited from more editorial cutting because the pacing is slow at times, especially at the beginning. Overall, however, this is a good sequel to We Hunt the Flame.
