Dept. of Speculation
by Jenny Offill
This is a beautiful little book. It took a while to grow on me, but it got there in the end. It is the story of a woman: her love, family, and marriage, but everything is told in short snippits and bursts and train-of-thought. It was as if you were watching her life through the lens of a camera, except that every time the shutter closed, time would leap forward. There were so many layers to this that I found utterly delightful. I don't think I could have enjoyed it as much if I hadn't been able to read large chunks at a time - this is definitely a single sitting book if at all possible; without that, I think the style would have lost me.
