Too Good to Be True by Carola Lovering

CONTENT WARNING: infidelity, OCD, addiction, death of a parent, death of a child, sexual assault

Whoa, this book absolutely blew my mind! Every time I thought that I had a handle on what was actually happening, the next chapter completely flipped the script and I realized that I had absolutely no idea what was really happening! But it was such a good book in the craziest way.

It's told from three points of view - Skye's POV talks about present day events, Heather's POV is told in flashes of the past, and Burke's POV ranges from the recent past to the present day. And with each chapter, we learn a little bit more about what is actually happening. But beware - just when you think you know what is really going on? You don't.

How I viewed the characters changed dramatically over time - my first impression of the characters was pretty off the mark, now that I've finished the book and figured everything out. The plot twists were amazing, and while I saw some of them coming, more of them blindsided me than not. It's written really well, and I loved the way the narrators told this story. They did a great job of sucking me in and making their characters incredibly believable. I could understand at least some of where they were coming from, although at least one of the characters is wholly unlikable and not really redeemable in my eyes, while one of the less likable characters did earn some redemption in my eyes.

There's some pretty heavy content warnings in this story - addiction, death of a parent, death of a child, and sexual assault, and Skye has obsessive-compulsive disorder that is pretty severe which affects her life so much. It was heartbreaking to see how it's impacted all the areas of her life, and the ways she's had to adapt in order to live with this condition. In addition, it's affected her relationships and how others view her, and there's some stigma that's presented in the story that can be incredibly triggering to people with OCD, which is why I included it as a content warning, while I normally wouldn't.

Overall, I think this was a really good book, and I loved how it was all handled. I was hooked from the very beginning, and this is the kind of story that will stick with me for quite some time.
