Love Is a Dog from Hell by Charles Bukowski
1.0
Misogynistic as all fuck, which is to be expected from the time when this was written but the sexism in this one is pretty damn intense. The few times Bukowski writes of women as more than just sexual objects are demeaning and portray the woman as either manipulative or intellectually inferior. I read the entire book out of spite so I could argue with the perverted teenage boy who recommended it to me. Was not even worth it. Plus, along with the rampant misogyny, the writing isn’t even very good— sounds like a horny emo teenager.
In defense of Love is A Dog From Hell, it does have a cool title, and there were a couple quite good poems in there, but the majority were vastly disappointing and just pissed me off. I do not respect those who genuinely like Bukowski. The fact that so many people put him on a pedestal as a genius of his time is honestly very worrying. I do actually recommend reading this book, just so you can tell everyone who likes it how terrible it is.
