This summer they’ll keep their promise. This summer they won’t give into temptation. This summer will be different.
Lucy is the tourist vacationing at a beach house on Prince Edward Island. Felix is the local who shows her a very good time. The only problem: Lucy doesn’t know he’s her best friend’s younger brother. Lucy and Felix’s chemistry is unreal, but the list of reasons why they need to stay away from each other is long, and they vow to never repeat that electric night again.
It’s easier said than done.
Each year, Lucy escapes to PEI for a big breath of coastal air, fresh oysters and crisp vinho verde with her best friend, Bridget. Every visit begins with a long walk on the beach, beneath soaring red cliffs and a golden sun. And every visit, Lucy promises herself she won’t wind up in Felix’s bed. Again.
If Lucy can’t help being drawn to Felix, at least she’s always kept her heart out of it.
When Bridget suddenly flees Toronto a week before her wedding, Lucy drops everything to follow her to the island. Her mission is to help Bridget through her crisis and resist the one man she’s never been able to. But Felix’s sparkling eyes and flirty quips have been replaced with something new, and Lucy’s beginning to wonder just how safe her heart truly is.

Picking This Summer Will Be Different as my most anticipated May release was an absolute no-brainer! I'd been anticipating Carley Fortune's latest novel since she started sharing glimpses of her writing process on social media. The fact it moved away from her Ontario settings to PEI was an added intrigue. I pre-ordered the Indigo Exclusive edition with gold foil lettering on the cover and a special map of some of Carley's favourite island destinations. Her letter at the beginning detailing her connection to Anne of Green Gables and PEI already had me sucked in.
What a breath of fresh summer air - Carley Fortune has done it again! Told in alternating timelines with the most idyllic setting, this story is so fun, flirty, and heartfelt. Lucy and Felix's meet-cute was one of the best and their chemistry leapt off the page despite so many obstacles along the way. The views into the past allowed the reader to get a taste of what has brought them to the present day and it all worked perfectly.
While a romance at its core, this novel is so much more!
The friendship between Lucy and Bridget was simply beautiful. The hardships of adulthood were handled with care and compassion, while flawlessly interwoven into the narrative through the found family aspect. And of course, the Prince Edward Island setting - the landscape, the beaches, the food, the ice cream, the butter, the people - all of it captured the very essence of the island. Heck, I don't even like oysters, yet Carley had be wanting to shuck with the best of them. It's all of the small details, like Lucy owning a flower shop and dreaming of owning a flower farm, that made this book so refreshing.
This Summer Will Be Different is an ode to Anne of Green Gables (she named her main character Lucy), PEI, and the family you find along the way, and friendship. Carley Fortune delivers everything flawlessly and I absolutely love her writing. Her next book cannot get here fast enough, and I imagine she could write a restaurant menu and make it fantastic. I want everyone to read this book, so I can shout about it from the rooftops. I was super excited when it was chosen as July's in-person book club pick, yet disappointed I will miss the meeting. If you read one book this summer, let it be This Summer Will Be Different!

"But I take strange comfort in these waves of heartache. They’re like annotations in a book, a note in the margin that reads, This is important."
"She looks sweet, with those dresses and that smile, but Bee is tough. Tougher than she thinks. She hates fighting, but she won't stand down when it matters. It's one of the things I admire most about her. I used to wish that we had met earlier in life, when we were kids or teenagers, but not I think we found each other at the right time. We became adults together. Our friendship is how I learned to compromise. It's how I learned that the families we make are as significant as the ones we're born into. It's how I learned that the greatest loves are not always romances."
