Bastion by Mercedes Lackey

3.0

Basically, a lot of nothing happens in this book. Well written as always by the fabulous Ms Lackey but I just can't connect to this character, even after 5 books! Her first series, the Arrows one, Talia was such a beautiful character you laughed with her, you cried with her, and you cheered when she got her happy ending.

With this series, much as I enjoy visiting the Valdemar world, I just can't get interested in Mags. There was no struggle with his abilities, no interaction with other students (he lives separately and there are very few class scenes). The whole premise of this series was it was the foundation of the Herald's Collegium but there are very little actual scenes where the collegium plays a role, just lots of sports scenes which is the Quidditch equivalent of this world.

Don't get me wrong, there are lots of action sequences and the mystery of Mags' parentage is solved but it has taken so long and there was nothing else to interest me (except for his loss of virginity and I guess because this is mostly YA that was glossed over but a very cute scene where he gets the info on how to please a woman) that I am beginning to think that Ms Lackey has run out of ideas so is making one idea stretch over a whole series and it shows.

I think I might just go back and read about Talia again
