In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

challenging dark emotional reflective tense medium-paced

5.0

oooft. i'm so glad to have finally got round to this. it is as brilliant as everyone has clued it to be. carmen maria machado is an incredible storyteller, sharing her story in such a brilliant, truthful and powerful way.

formally it is brilliant, giving readers powerful bite-sized moments to create a full fledged shadow of her lived experience we won't ever truly know or understand. but many glimpses and moments crystalise across relationships of this nature. connecting her story with queer history, mythology and pop culture - the way of sharing is unique and addictive, despite the heaviness of the content. we experience machado's story through the moments she has pieced together and shared, and honestly i'm flawed by this autobiography. it's powerful and tender throughout, and unlike anything i've read previously.

moments stand alone (eg. the choose your own adventure section could be a piece in itself), but then together, just wow. it allows readers to peek behind the curtains into what can, does and has occurred in lesbian relationships. many things to reflect upon. all power to carmen maria machado.

[came back a few days later, made this 5 star reads bc it's still lingering on my mind, and an easy recommend for friends who are up for it!]
