This was my first Brandon Sanderson novel. Every review I read or watched about the Cosmere warned that this book is his weakest and not to start here, to start with Mistborn instead. I can say I'm glad I disregarded that advice, trying to stick relatively with publication order while trying to keep series together is my plan. I loved the way this story developed and it wasn't what I expected based off of the blurb, it was better.
I really enjoyed the political nature of this book. I never looked forward to Hrathen's chapters and was pleased that they were mostly the shortest. However, in the end his scenes were a good pay off and I am glad to have had his perspective.
The book wraps up really well, but there is so much left to explore, it makes me wonder why (despite knowing Brandon Sanderson now has plans to write sequels) this novel hasn't been followed up and the magic of Elantris explored. I'm very invested in AonDor.
Even though this is my first step into the Cosmere, I can say it's a great entry point. Don't get too caught up with people saying it's not the greatest.
