Jane In Love by Rachel Givney

4.0

I’ve had Jane in Love on my TBR #bookcart for ages and I almost donated it thinking it was probably a bit too rom com for me. But then I saw it was on Borrowbox and I decided to listen to it on audio. Well it was actually quite delightful and I enjoyed my listen!

Basic premise is Jane Austen is hoping to find love and more importantly a husband and when she is spurned she rashly runs off to London to meet a matchmaker. Mrs Sinclair is less of a traditional matchmaker and more of a witch and Jane acquires a spell to help her find her true love. When she reads out the spell she is transported to modern day England. Very quickly she finds herself friends with actress Sophia Wentworth and her bother Fred who Jane might very slowly be falling in love with.

On paper this is a classic time travel, person from the past can’t comprehend the modern day world shtick BUT this did not bother me as much as I expected. Jane and her quest for love which buts up against her desire to write was so engaging. Sure there was a lot of clichés but I definitely got hooked in. Would Jane choose love or her writing??

All I know is that I finished this book wanting to re-read all of Austen’s novels. I last read these in my teens and I think reading them as an adult might be quite the experience.
