I love that this is more detailed than the anime as it really helps to explain why the characters behave the way they do. I for one don't hate Shinji's character. The weight of having to save the world from destruction is far too much for someone already struggling with anxiety and insecurity. Not every young protagonist can or should have a heroic nature, and Shinji's character is far more realistic in that sense. That's something that really sets evangelion apart from other popular animes with teenage protagonists that seem to just power through the challenges they face.
