This is one of the most deeply personal books I’ve ever read, and I am amazed by the way that Hoover is able to lean into some of the most discomforting topics for a novel to address. I found myself physically shaking the book in several moments because I was feeling so many conflicting emotions. I was really angry most of the time, but in the best way. A truly thought provoking and nuanced novel and I couldn’t put it down. And the ending can only be described as bittersweet.
The only reason it drops a few stars is because every time she wrote a letter to Ellen it completely took me out of the book.
