Just My Type: A Book about Fonts by Simon Garfield
funny
informative
lighthearted
medium-paced
4.0
On my quest to read books from every genre, this was the perfect book to touch on the subject of design. It also helps that I LOVE FONTS and this delighted me!
Who knew fonts could be so INTERESTING? I'm just a lowly casual font fan and this was a joy. I loved how Simon Garfield touched on all different fonts and their histories. Comic Sans gets so much hate but it actually has quite a fascinating history. From the king that is Helvetica, to Gotham and its role in helping get Obama elected (no joke), this book is nerdy and fantastic. My ADHD did struggle briefly to stay focused on the writing once in a while. Sometimes it didn't quite feel as engaging as I would have liked, but overall I still really enjoyed this book.
And the author's list of the worst fonts made me laugh out loud.
I listened to the audiobook; so I can't comment on any visuals that the physical or ebook probably offers. But Gildart Jackson was a fantastic narrator and if you choose to listen to the audiobook, it helps to pause to do a quick search of the font that's mentioned, just to get a proper visual of the font in question, as the author will discuss its characteristics as well as its fascinating history.
