Double Love by Francine Pascal
3.0

Jessica Wakefield is a horrible person. There's no subjectivity here. She's selfish, narcissistic, manipulates her sister to get what she wants, and always has to be the center of attention. When she's not, she throws a tantrum, screams, cries her eyes out, and says she has the worst life/day/sister/family ever (take your pick depending on the situation). What makes it even worse is her twin sister Elizabeth is a coward. She always defers to Jessica, lets her have everything she wants, and enables her at every turn. I don't care what kind of a bond you share, that's wrong. When Elizabeth has eyes for only one guy at school, Jessica has to have him first- and not because of his personality, no, it's because he's "the cutest guy in school" and captain of the soccer team. She goes out on one date with him, but because he's not into her, she makes up this horrendous story that he sexually assaulted her so Elizabeth would stay away from him. She is the worst kind of person.
Why a three star then? Several reasons. I really enjoy the rest of the characters, and have always liked the Sweet Valley stories. They are quick, addictive, and engaging. This is a reread for me, although technically I haven't read this story in about 25 years. It brings the nostalgia to the surface for me, and as we all know, that's a huge bias. Also, Elizabeth does come out on top at the end, and get her sweet revenge on Jessica.
I feel like I would have to read a few more of these to see how I really end up feeling about the series. The first can be a fluke, and nothing like the rest. Overall, Double Love is frustrating, addicting, and ultimately leaves you wanting more, even if you know it may not be that good for you (rather like a candy bar). This was a great blast from the past for me, and I'm eager to tackle more.
