At the Edge of the Orchard
by Tracy Chevalier
A story that spans a lifetime and alternates between three characters. James Goodenough spends every waking hour with his beloved apple trees. Originally from Connecticut, he and his family settled down in the swamps of Ohio after their wagon gave up and although life is difficult, he seems agreeable as long as his trees are thriving.
Sadie Goodenough feels the exact opposite of her husband. She loathes the swamp and everything it contains. Her main concern is not the children nor her husband, all that ever really worries her is if she has a good supply of alcohol in hand. She must’ve loved her husband at one time but his devotion to the apples and nonchalance towards her care has seemed to rub away any love that could be found.
Some years later, their son Robert sets off west after an unfortunate accident and keeps moving. When he reaches California and meets a fellow tree lover is where his life truly begins but all the cares left behind never seem to stay away and he can’t run forever.
To say that I enjoyed this book would be understatement. I loved it, the story takes on different aspects that really make the reader think and the detail that went into the tale was impressive. I particularly enjoyed all the complexities of tree farming and the dedication it requires. Truly a wonderful read!
