Ghosts of the Shadow Market by Cassandra Clare, Maureen Johnson, Sarah Rees Brennan

4.0

“There was a lightness in Jem’s chest that he realized, finally, was joy. He saw that joy mirrored in his parabatai’s face. The face of the one you love is the best mirror of all. It shows you your own happiness and your own pain and it helps you to bear both, because to bear either alone is to be overwhelmed by the flood.” - Jem Carstairs, Ghosts of the Shadow Market

I really loved reading all of these short stories. I am so happy that we got all this extra Jem content because he is one of my favorite characters. Seeing him throughout history, as both Brother Zachariah and Jem was just so fulfilling for his character. And there is nothing I love more from Cassandra Clare’s books than her characters.

I was honestly pleasantly surprised by how much Ghosts of the Shadow Market contributes to a wide range of various other characters in the series as well. I love that I got to see some backstory for Anna Lightwood and Matthew Fairchild before starting Chain of Gold. That scene with Jem and Will at the end of Learn about Loss was everything I didn’t know that I needed. Getting to see how Alec finds Rafe made me fall so in love with their little family, I am so looking forward to reading The Red Scrolls of Magic now! Meeting Celine Herondale, I was blown away, her character was so interesting and fleshed out and she is now easily one of my favorites. And I actually don’t know how I feel about this Janus character. The whole situation gives me CIty of Lost Souls vibes if you know what I mean. But I also loved that we got a little peek of Kit and Ty and Livvy! I cannot wait for The Wicked Powers y’all omg.

If you were unsure whether you wanted to pick up Ghosts of the Shadow Market because it is only short stories and is really all just “extra” information, trust me you should definitely read it. You will not regret it. If you’re missing the shadowhunter world this would be the perfect thing to read to just dip your toes in.
