Hell's Aquarium by Steve Alten
4.0

Four years have passed since Angel, the 76ft, 100,000 pound megalodon, birthed a litter of pups far too numerous and aggressive to keep in one pen. Fortunately, a Dubai royal prince who is building the largest aquarium in the world, seeks to purchase 2 of the the "runts" - if Joanas Taylor's 21 year old son, David, will be their handler. Jonas reluctantly agrees, and David is off to Dubai for the summer of his life, not realizing that he is being set up to lead and expedition that will hunt down and capture the most dangerous creatures ever to inhabit the earth!

The book follows 2 different stories- that of David in Dubai and Jonas and the rest of the family back home dealing with Angel and her pups. I am not a huge fan of Jonas' kids, so I was not thrilled with having so much of the book follow 20 year old David. I was not interested in his love story and it (the love interest) felt too fast paced for him to just through everything out the window for this girl. I don't know, I'm not a romantic type, so maybe that's just me. But it was 2 weeks of knowing this girl and then he is sure he is in love LOVE with her and wants to get married and out to rescue her. I'm not saying you can't fall in love fast, but, all we saw of the relationship is her being a flirty tease, then frosty, then leave. There wasn't a lot of depth shown that would make this deep love seem real. The woman was also just annoying! She could have been a bad ass, but instead she is just a tease and then starts flipping her shit when things go down. Really? It was just AGH. But, the part of David's story about the aquarium and catching other hidden sea creatures was pretty interesting and fun. It would have just been so much better without the love interest (to me anyways). I get that it was there to spur him in to action and to set up the next book.... *shrug* I don't know... it just felt a little rushed and cliched. Jonas' side of the story was a little bit slower, but more interesting. It actually dealt with the megs. We are introduced to 2 very cunning and smart new megs- Lizzy and Bella. Their story was very fascinating and it set up for the next book in the series, Nightstalkers. That is going to be fun!

With about 100 pages left in the book, the action really picks up as the 2 story lines meet up, sea creatures collide, and rescues are attempted. It was not stop, edge of your seat moments all the way up to the very last page. The ending was pretty abrupt, but again, it set you right up for the next book in the series. So again, I'm looking forward to picking up the next book and following the action to see what is going to happen. This one had a bigger cliffhanger / set up for the next book, more so then the other books in the series.

Annoyed with David, but over all it was a decent book. Even the "slower" parts were still pretty fast paced and the action was pretty fun. Not as much death and destruction to people this round. Seemed more like death and destruction to other sea life then to people. Looking forward to the next book.
