Melissa by Alex Gino

5.0

This book is truly a masterpiece. I believe that it provides something for every reader. Most importantly, the young (or old) trans readers can see themselves represented. However, for the Cis audience, it gives an honest and bold telling of being trans. It shows the fear, discrimination but balanced with joy and euphoria.

The use of female pronouns, even as male pronouns are being used for Melissa, is beautiful. It shows the lack of understanding of her gender by her community but her growing internal understanding of self.

I also loved the portrayal of Melissa's friends and family. There were was a vast array of reactions and levels of support that felt true to the experience of many young trans kids. There was outright violence and bullying in addition to more nuanced characters. Melissa's mom has the best interest for Melissa despite her lack of understanding and information. Kelly is another character showing nuance. She takes some time to accept and does not understand fully how to respond or support her friend, but in the end, it is a critical support system.

Overall this book is beautiful; I have nothing more to add. Thank you, Alex Gino.
