I really tried to like this since I loved Malcolm in the previous book but I cannot get over the age gap between him and Lyra, and especially as he was her teacher as a teenager. I also hated the chapter where she nearly gets raped it served no purpose, as far as I could see, to the plot and the way its presented as "don't go to the middle east you will be attacked, oppressed and raped as a woman" is so bad.
