The Snowman
by Jo Nesbø
The last time I read anything resembling detective fiction or thriller/suspense, it was probably Mary Higgins Clark in the 90s. I can't say it's my favourite genre, but this book has reminded me why I should read more. I haven't read the other Harry Hole series, but I chose this one for two reasons: 1) of all the Nordic noir books recommended, this came in the highest and 2) the movie had just come out, though I haven't seen it yet. Probably good that I hadn't! I was sucked in by the first chapter and how it ends, "we're going to die." I mean, why wouldn't I want to find out what was going to happen? Well, I jumped in wholeheartedly from there - to Harry's flawed character (anti-hero, really), his ex who keeps giving in and reveals her own weaknesses, to blunt, seemingly untouchable Katrine Bratt, and all the cast of characters from there - including, of course, The Snowman himself. The story is riveting, fast-paced enough to keep me reading - I finished it in about a day and a half - and made me want to find out who exactly was the The Snowman. I had my suspicions about halfway through - maybe a little more than that - but it really wasn't confirmed until the end of the book.
Great with a cup of tea, some lights on - just maybe not on the night of the first snow.
