Malice by Heather Walter

I really enjoyed this - it was a strong and amazing retelling, always difficult to do with a story we know *so well*

It fit into the original story well but expanded it and improved it beautifully - I love that the author chose to not make Alyce beautiful; that they played on the fact Aurora had no idea what she actually looked like thanks to magic use she had no say in. It was a throwaway line that had a huge impact on me whilst reading. The slow giving away of power to men, the authentic idiocy of two young people suddenly trying to take over a kingdom and failing; the triumphant end for Alyce not getting what she wanted, but probably what she needed for her own journey.

I do wish though - not that I’m rating it less for this wish because it’s not impacting the book at all really - that it had just been a fade to black. It was a beautifully written scene and fit the book well; I just feel the rest of this book is so suited for a wide audience without being written in a way that feels like it’s trying to be (I hope that makes sense) and I know so many people I’d love to recommend this book to who are young and need more lgbtq+ rep in their books (I wish I’d had it); but I can’t recommend it as there’s a sex scene and they’re a bit young yet.
