The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

5.0

Disclaimer: I read this book for my MG and YA class.

I think this book is a masterpiece. I think every character, even the small ones, have enough complexity and depth and conflict to be main characters in their own novels. The relationships between all of them and Xio are just fantastically written.

And the book is fantastically written overall. This class turned me on to verse novels, and I think this is the best example I can think of in the entire subgenre. There's a fascinating thing going on where the poems we read function doubly as the narrative and the poems Xio writes WITHIN the narrative, which was super cool to read. They're also just good poems, even outside of the story. "Verses" really stood out to me as this insane work of art.

There wasn't a second I wasn't caught up in this story. Seriously great book.
