A book recommended by Emma - I liked the coming of age narrative but it felt a bit too young for my stage in life for it to be relatable.
I liked the depiction of island life but I didn’t love the mystery of its geographical whereabouts - I think somewhere off the east coast of the USA?
The inclusion of “magic powers” would not normally interest me but I liked it in this book.
Towards the end the book deals with some heavy themes. I like the attitude of the characters and in turn the author in seeking to advocate a modern day point of view in what seems to be quite a timeless piece of writing.
