This book was a love story between two very poor main characters who are in competition with each other to earn a scholarship that will help them get out of their current situation.

The book spans over several years. The first part begins with the main characters, Kyland and Tenleigh, meeting and falling in love. The second part documents years later after one of them wins the scholarship and they navigate life as adults who still don’t have closure for what happened in the past.

I think the story telling had a few holes, but I will say that I enjoyed Mia Sheridan giving readers a true glimpse of what a poor mine town is like. I liked that she didn’t sugarcoat the struggles that the characters went through. I was frustrated with the back and forth at times because I felt like realistically people wouldn’t have as much missed communication as these two characters, but it propelled the story line further so it somehow worked. It’s worth giving a shot too because it is an easy read!
