A Walk to Remember

A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks
Read April 2024
A Walk to Remember made me smile and cry, both within a few pages of one another. You learn to love Jamie and Landon so much—Nicholas Sparks has a way of doing that to you. The book and the movie are both incredible but...I'd never think I'd say this...the movie was better! I know it's crazy but the movie was amazing and I was a little disappointed. I feel like the book could've been SO GOOD if they had just slowed down the plot a little and built the characters more, especially Landon. Since I had watched the movie, I knew the plot so I could envision it more. However, if you have not watched the movie it may be harder to become closer to the characters and really understand their personalities. I'd say 2.25/5. But still pretty good!
Positive messages: 4.5/5
(Negative message) Landon says that he knows lying to Jamie about the money is the right thing to do, even though he feels guilty about it afterward. (Positive messages) No matter what, you can always rely on God to get you through any circumstance. You don’t need to fit in or be popular and you don’t need to rely on the love of the world, but on what God wants to you. Always respect your parents’ decisions and love them. Love your neighbor as yourself, even if they are not kind to you.
Positive role models: 5/5
Landon learns to love God more and more through Jamie. Jamie is kind to everyone that crosses her path and respectful to her father, whatever he may decide for her. She is loving and patient with Landon and loves him even when he is a jerk to her. She cares for other people more than herself and is always volunteering at the orphanage, reading the Bible, watching the stars, or raising money for a cause. She is a truly wonderful soul and beautiful girl who you will learn to love.
Drinking, Drugs, and Smoking: 2/5
Landon says that his friend can be sort of heartless when he has a few shots of bourbon in him. He also talks about how good ol’ Lew spiked the punch bowl and many people were getting tipsy. Landon mentions how he doesn’t understand how Eric always has no problem getting beer even though everyone in town knows how old he is.
Language: 2/5
Characters say the word s**t once and d**n. Bastard is used.
Violence and Gore: 0/5
None present.
Sex, Romance, and Nudity: 2/5
Landon talks about how Jamie has two new ‘bumps’ under her shirt. He imagines his french kiss with Angela, his previous girlfriend. Two friends talk about kissing girls. Characters kiss.
What Parents Should Know:
This book is clean and appropriate for any teen or mature tween looking for a good read. This book is very sad and happy at the same time and you fall completely IN LOVE with the characters. There are many positive role models, Jamie being the main one. She is always helping others and trusting God. She has such a strong faith and is inspiring to many Christians going through difficult situations. There is a little drinking or mention of drinking, which is to be expected when you are talking about teenage boys. Lew ‘spikes the punch bowl’ and it is mentioned that Eric drinks beer even though he is way too young. S**t is mentioned once at the beginning of the book when talking about fill-in-the-blanks. D**n is also used once. Bastard, which is not considered a bad word to some people, is used a few times. Other than that, there is no cursing. Although this book is considered a romance, there are no sexual scenes or mentions of sex. There is just kissing and holding hands—that’s all. Landon talks about Jamie’s figure and how beautiful she is and mentions her boobs once. Some characters talk about being kissed or kissing. This book is a gem and was an amazing read. A beautiful drama/romance that will forever be remembered. Perfect for any age! I know many adults and teens who have read this book and watched the movie. Loved it!
