Mansfield Park by Jane Austen
3.0

I was loving it and was fully prepared to give it four stars. But then I got to the ending... I've seen the BBC version of the movie so I was pretty sure who Fanny was going to marry. But while reading the book, I couldn't see how it was going to resolve to that "happy" ending. Unfortunately, I thought the ending was incredibly rushed and was very disappointed with how the book concluded.
SpoilerI actually wanted Fanny to end up with Mr. Crawford, to finally be persuaded by his long-lasting efforts to win her love. Having Mr. Crawford suddenly run away with Mrs. Rushworth, and for Edmund to suddenly discover that Fanny is, after all, his true love? It felt like a blow to the reader. That's not how I wanted the story to turn out. I don't think this is going to be a favorite.

Surprisingly, my favorite character was not Edmund or Fanny or Mr. Crawford, but Sir Thomas! I was much more interested in how he evolved as a parent. That felt like true character development over the course of the novel, much more so than any of the other characters.
