When Sleeping Women Wake by Emma Pei Yin

5.0

Absolutely charmed. It’s my first time reading on Japanese occupation in Hong Kong. History wise, I gained new knowledge / insights with more in depth research after reading. Character wise, Emma developed them so well. I admired the female strength, resilience and determination, I liked how the usual atrocities were described, yet with new layers on how some Japanese soldiers may be part of the resistance against their empire. That was a fresh perspective that other books on Japanese occupation never mention.

This was a book that made me stay up till 3am. It will stay with me for a long time!
