Dire Straits and Entwined Fates by Alice Winters

5.0

5 stars - I loved it!

This book picks up shortly after the previous book ends. Casimir and Julian are now officially dating and are working together to keep the peace between their two races. When they stumble upon a half-dead vampire who is being hunted by someone things quickly turn dangerous again. Someone from Casimir’s past seems to be out for revenge and is determined to take out everything he cares about.

After reading the first book, we briefly learn that Casimir was trained as an assassin but not a lot of details outside of that. In this one we finally see him open up about his past with Julian and we learn about why he is the way he is. A man from his past has returned and is determined to destroy everything he loves now, mainly Julian, and we see how hard Casimir is struggling to deal with all these new feelings. I loved Casimir in the first book but this book really helped develop his character even more because we see him really open up to Julian, accept comfort about his past, and start to believe that he isn’t a monster that his past tried to make him into.

The relationship between Casimir and Julian in this one continues to grow strong as they both finally admit their love for one another and we see Casimir talk about his past with Julian finally. While this one does have a more serious tone with the discussions of Casimir’s past, we still get the wonderful and hilarious banter and scenes in between which really helped keep this story and romance from being too heavy and depressing. Also, I absolutely love the hilarious banter between these two and I really want more books with them now because it just makes me laugh and smile so much.

Overall, this was another fantastic addition to Casimir and Juilan’s story. I can’t wait to read more from this series and see what happens next for them, and for the other characters in this series. I love everyone in this series so much and really hope some of the side characters get their own books like Ezio and Yorick.
